"Deal or No Deal" has turned Howie Mandel into one of the most-watched people on television. Now comes Bob Saget, hoping for the same result with a new game show on NBC.
Saget -- "America's beloved funnyman," NBC calls him -- has signed on to host "1 vs. 100," a game in which, as the title implies, one contestant plays a game against 100 others. The show, a Dutch import that's being brought to the States by "Deal or No Deal" producer Endemol, will debut sometime during the 2006-07 season.
"Bob is popular with audiences of all ages and is a perfect fit as host," says Craig Plestis, head of alternative programming at NBC. "His irreverent sense of humor and comedic timing will keep audiences laughing and glued to their TV sets as the drama of this high-stakes game unfolds."
In "1 vs. 100," a single player faces off against a group of 100 others in a trivia game. Members of the big group are eliminated as they answer questions wrong, and the longer the single player stays in, the bigger the possible prize.
Saget is probably best-known as the star of such family-friendly fare as "Full House" and "America's Funniest Home Videos," although his stand-up material is rather more grown-up. He's also done image-subverting work in HBO's "Entourage" and the film "The Aristocrats," about the dirtiest joke of all time.
He's currently at work on "Farce of the Penguins," a parody of the documentary "March of the Penguins" that will hit theaters in early 2007. He also does the voice-over narration on the CBS comedy "How I Met Your Mother."
