Sydney Pollack (Tootsie, Out of Africa) has backed out of directing HBO's Recount for "unspecified medical reasons" says . Jay Roach (Austin Powers, Meet the Parents) will replace him for the film which chronicles the Florida presidential election recount of 2000. Scripted by Danny Strong, the film tells the stories of the people behind the scenes who determined the next president of the United States by their actions or inactions. The film should premiere in 2008, just in time for the next election.

Hopefully Sydney Pollack's medical situation isn't too serious. Good man.
