Laura Linney has signed to star in the HBO miniseries "John Adams" opposite Paul Giamatti.

Tom Hooper, who won an Emmy for helming cabler's "Elizabeth I," has come aboard to direct all seven hourlong episodes.

Playtone is producing the American Revolution-set piece for HBO Films. Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman exec produce the project based on the David McCullough bestseller of the same name.

Linney will play Adams' wife, Abigail, whose letters to her husband were part of the basis for McCullough's book.

Giamatti was cast several months ago as Adams (Daily Variety, Aug. 21), who will be portrayed in his earlier years as a Massachusetts lawyer working behind the scenes to mobilize the revolt of the colonies.

Co-exec producer Kirk Ellis wrote the mini, which begins shooting next month in Virginia.

First of the seven installments will premiere in March.

Linney is shooting James Ivory pic "The City of Your Final Destination," co-starring Anthony Hopkins.

Her upcoming movies include "The Nanny Diaries," "Breach" and "The Savages."
