News > What's Going on With 'Veronica Mars'?

There has been quite a bit of hubbub as of late about the status of fan-darling, ratings-under-achiever "Veronica Mars". After the CW dropped it from the winter rotation to free up space for "The Search For The New Pussycat Doll"*, every man, woman and child was pretty certain the show was heading to the garbage pile. Amidst wild-eyed panicky rumors of the show's demise, show-creator Rob Thomas has stated that if and when the show does return after this season it will most likely return in a completely different format, this one taking place four years in the future with Veronica Mars (Kristen Bell) now a fledgling FBI agent.
As for now a CW rep has stated "The show has not been cancelled. A decision will be made at the Upfront on May 17."
Completely overhauling the series concept has it's pros and cons. If the show has to choose between renewel and cancellation, I think fans would be happier to have "Veronica Mars" back on the boobtube, no matter if she's no longer scouring the halls of college, tracking down rapists and corrupt faculty members. The peeps behind "Veronica Mars" are extremely talented and they've managed to take a mundane, cliche idea and turn it into an interesting, exciting hour-long.
On the flip side of the coin, a reformating of the general concept is going to come with a lot of excess baggage snipping. I can't imagine that any of the solid supporting cast will be left standing, aside maybe from VM's detective dad, leaving the show standing on Kristen Bell's star power and exceptional good looks. Placing the character four years in the future is a huge paradigm shift for fans and newbies to clutch on to, and the sheer trouble and logistics of the enterprise might be too much for a network like CW.
I for one think the show is great and would hate to see it fall to the wayside, but as always money talks louder then just about anything, and if it's not bringing in the bank (or projected to bring in the bank) then I can't imagine the network keeping it around.
I guess we'll just have to wait for May 17th to see what happens.
* A truly abysmal show that I find myself terribly drawn to every week because of the slutty hotness of all involved. Damn you cleavage! Damn you!
