News > TW RECAP: Entourage 4-8-07

April 9, 2007

It's fitting "Entourage" used roller coasters in its promos last season. I'm sure they were intending the roller coaster in the promo to be a metaphor for the crazy ride for the life of an actor. But it's a fitting analogy for the life of a TV show as well. It peaks and then goes down hill from there. Which is precisely what it seems "Entourage" is going through now.

SPOILERS

We open the episode pretty much where the last episode left off. Drama is feebly attempting to cash in on his modest success (the show he's starring in, "5 Towns," is about to premier), Turtle is being a shlub, E is being a wannabe and Vince is floating around aimlessly with various degrees of stubble length.

Ari is still fired and Vince's hot new agent (played by that hot naked parole officer from "Sin City") is...well, hot. But that's about it. She has the "balls" to even attempt to get Vince to star in an adaptation of an Edith Wharton book. Edith Wharton isn't even taught in school anymore, so you know the script has to suck.

It's Vince's birthday coming up, so the B story for the episode is Turtle and Drama spending E's cash to throw a huge gala event. It's strange that both "Entourage" and "The Sopranos'" main characters celebrate their birthdays in their respective first episodes, but whatever.

As a birthday gift, Vince's new agent takes him court side for a Lakers' game, which seems like such a cliche for stars at this point it's kind of a lame gift. Ari, who happens to be court-side as well (on the other side of the court), thinks the same thing, who used to take Vince court-side to celebrate Arbor day.

Ari, now thoroughly embarrassed, desperately wants to attend Vince's birthday party so he calls him up...and hangs up when he answers the phone. He's too scared, of course...just like an ex boyfriend scared to take his ex bitch out for an ice cream the third week after she dumped him for that fat guy who drives a Harley.

Ari finally works up the courage to at the very least set up a lunch "date" with Vince and E, which they accept. They actually invite Ari to the party and in the mean time Ari has given Vince a "present" he's sure he'll love.

The present turns out to be the script to the Paul Haggis film "Medellin," which Vince was up for and had slipped away and been given to Benicio del Toro instead. Ari insinuates the script is a sign that Vince might have a shot at being in the film again, which no one but Vince believes.

At the end of the episode, Vince's new agent informs him of the good news...the people doing the Edith Wharton movie don't even need to meet Vince...they're just ready to make an offer. Cool...but he's gonna hold out to see if what Ari said was true.

Wow...

My basic complaint was that the story has yet to move forward. The characters are still stuck in their habits, it doesn't seem like there's been any story development. And dudes we're like four movies past "Medellin." Give Vinnie something new to pretend is his new dream project.

The season can either be more of the same (which would suck) or, fingers crossed, the whole lot of 'em start changing (for the better or worse, who cares...just switch it up plz).
