News > Sorkin Speaks!

Aaron Sorkin's latest television show 'Studio 60' was a literal shit in the bed.  A cliched, pointless look at a late night sketch television show, that went nowhere and bellowed out Sorkin's usual liberal tripe with nary a hint of tact.  That's the reason why it failed - because it was bad.  Not because it was to autobiographical, not because it was some sort of reaction of Sorkin's to his romantic affair with Kristin Chenowith, not because he argued with the press prior to its release.  Nope, it was just bad.  Far, far below the usual standards of the prolific writer.

Though there's been an assload of speculation just on why the show failed, Sorkin himself has never spoken on it ... until now.  In an interview with The L.A. Times Sorkin goes off on the variety of rumors currently circulating about the now, thankfully, deceased show.  His biggest blame?  The fact that people are so entangled in his life story.  Sorkin tells the newspaper:

'I can flat-out guarantee that Phil [Rosenthal, head-writer of 'Everyone Loves Raymond'] was writing autobiographical stories in his show, but for some reason people just aren't caught up in the gossip of his life.  It's just unhealthy. 'After the Fall' is a better play if you don't know that Arthur Miller and Marilyn Monroe were married. It doesn't enhance the experience of seeing the play if you're being a detective, always looking for clues. You only see the writing through a filter that takes you out of the actual story'

Nice point Sorkin, but your show sucked.  Get over it.

The entire article is pretty interesting though as Sorkin is a fascinating character.
