Women's cable network Oxygen is going into production on its first competition series, the Lisa Rinna-hosted Tease, which centers on the world of hairstyling.
Each hourlong episode will feature two up-and-coming hairstylists chosen from salons nationwide as they face off in what is described as an "outrageous, Olympics-style" tournament, competing for a chance at a one-on-one battle with a high-profile "master stylist." Should they beat the pro, they will receive an honor dubbed the "silver scissors."
The six-episode series is set to go into production next week in Los Angeles for a January premiere.
"We haven't done an actual bona fide competition show, and when I saw the concept, I thought, this is fun, we should go for this," said Debby Beece, president of programming and marketing at Oxygen. "[Viewers will have] a lot of fun watching these guys and girls compete and deal with the stress and pressure."
Challenges will feature hairstyles ranging from special-occasion to everyday wear or really "outlandish" styles, Beece said. The hairstylists will be judged by a panel including Robert Verdi (E! Entertainment Television/Style Network's Fashion Police), Los Angeles salon owner Peter Ishkhans and booking agent Frank Moore.
Oxygen does air a televised beauty competition special, Mo'Nique's Fat Chance, but Tease marks the network's first competition series.
Beece also praised host Rinna. "Women love her," she said. "She's big and bold but very relatable and down-to-earth--and she has great hair."
Rinna was a contestant on Season 2 of ABC's Dancing With the Stars and was nominated for a Daytime Emmy three times for her role as cohost of SoapNet's SoapTalk.
