News > New York Gets a lot of "Love"
[Via The Hollywood Reporter]
New York is A city of dreams, rats, roaches, and short shorts in the summer. Existing as a bit of a abstract from the rest of the United States, the Big Apple is world unto itself. Attempting to capture some of the big city magic, producer Emmanuel Benbihy has assembled crack team of talent, young and old, to collaborate on a film entitled New York, je t'aime. The movie is set to be a collection of 5 minute segments, each made by a different director, each explicating a specific love affair that takes place within one of the 5 boroughs. Among the directors that have signed on are Zach Braff, Mira Nair, Park Chan-Wook and Fatih Akin.
Benbihy, who recently crafted a similar exploration of Paris, predictably entitled Paris, je t'aime, has plans for further expansion of the "je'taime" concept, hoping to complete New York and Beijing by the end of 2008. 12 directors and 12 5 minute vignettes sounds like an appealing and alternative approach, but the potential for disjointed confusion and a complete lack of continuity scares me a bit. Benbihy has apparently sign on a 5th, unnamed director, to handle transitions, but until I see it, I will remain in the corner of skepticism, pegging this as a good idea with dubious potential to be considered as a major successful work of artistry.
