The first hour of Showtime's miniseries "Sleeper Cell: American Terror" will premiere on Dec. 10, with the entire series available On Demand that same day.
Sneaking single episodes of a show to the On Demand audience is hardly new. HBO, for example, has made every episode of this season's "The Wire" available On Demand in advance. But Showtime boasts that this marks the first time that an entire series or miniseries has aired on On Demand before it has been shown on the network.
"This is a dramatic -- and exciting -- departure from the ways that the On Demand platform has previously been used," raves Tom Christie, executive vice president, sales for Showtime Networks. "The draw of 'Sleeper Cell: American Terror' gives cable operators a powerful marketing tool to showcase the flexibility and exclusive benefits the Showtime On Demand platform offers and drive subscription acquisition for the network. Now, more subscribers will have the chance to be drawn into the intrigue and suspense that makes 'Sleeper Cell: American Terror' such compelling viewing."
Whatever he said.
For those who plan to watch "Sleeper Cell: American Terror" in its standard format, the miniseries will air in eight hour-long segments beginning on Sunday, Dec. 10 at 9 p.m. ET and going through to the following Sunday.
The first miniseries installment of "Sleeper Cell" was nominated for a Golden Globe for outstanding miniseries and was recognized by the AFI as one of 2005's best television programs.
