TVGuide reports that executive producer Josh Gordon has answered questions regarding the apparent race-relations subtext of ABC's new series Cavemen, based on the popular Geico commercial. The Television Critics Association were troubled by the fact that nearly all of the stereotypes that seemed to be attributed to the cavemen in the pilot episode were stereotypes also often attributed to African Americans. Gordon replied, "We're aware that the pilot seems to lean a little bit more in that direction. We never saw them as a stand-in for one group." Future plotlines will revolve around one of the cavemen being lazy, and another in fear of being criticized for dating outside of his genus. Hmm. I'm trying to decide if this actually could be used as a clever approach to race relations or if these sorts of plotlines could get tired really quickly.
