News > Don Imus Suspended

April 9, 2007

Don Imus has been quite the talk of the town as of late, after he unleashed a barrage of racist remarks on the Rutgers Women's Basketball team on his syndicated radio show.  Including, but not limited to, referring to them as "nappy headed hos".

In response, MSNBC's parent company NBC News has suspended him indefinitely.  As for now, the mightily popular, sarcastic radio show legend is gearing up for what looks to be a fairly lengthy apology tour.  He's already hit up the Reverend Al Sharpton, who denied an invitation on to Imus' show, saying he'd only come if it was "his last show ever"; has apologized to players and family of the Rutger's team, and issued an emotional 13-minute apology on air.  In the works?  A trip to "The Today Show" studios for what has to be another, far more scrutinized apology.

I for believe Imus deserves as severe a punishment as possible, as the veteran host should know by now that referring to a girls basketball team, especially one that has a majority of black players, as "nappy headed hos" is as wrong as it can get.  Imus has apologized profusely, stating he's "a good person, who said a bad thing", but a heavy handed punishment would still send the message that this sort of behavior just isn't tolerated.
