News > Comedy Central to Produce Faux Courtroom Drama

April 11, 2007

announced that Lewis Black (who catches the stories that fall through the cracks for a segment we like to call "Back in Black") is hosting an upcoming Comedy Central court show called The Root of All Evil.

Co-produced by Scott Carter (Real Time with Bill Maher) and David Sacks (3rd Rock from the Sun), Root consists of two groups of comedians, each representing an idea or person in pop culture that some might consider evil. The comedians litigate at each other for a half hour, and at the end, Judge Black rules in favor of which group proved to be more evil. Some planned matchups are "Paris Hilton vs Dick Cheney," and "chick flicks vs video games."

The comedians to appear in the already-filmed pilot include Patton Oswald, Greg Geraldo, Andy Daley, and Paul F. Thompkins.

The show sounds potentially awesome (as does anything involving Lewis Black), but could we please use some other fucking comedians? Whether it's Premium Blend or any one of the 900 Comedy Central Presents iterations, Comedy Central has been using the same goddamn lineup of the same half-dozen unfunny comedians since the beginning of time. No, Greg Geraldo is not funny. Neither is Patton Oswald, no matter how much he looks like a fat(ter) version of Sean Astin. If they were even remotely goddamn funny, then every single Comedy Central show they've starred in wouldn't have gotten cancelled after half a season (Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn, anyone?).
