Ali Larter's Niki character will have an abbreviated role in the next season, as she takes off on some sort of journey early on.  Larter said, '[She's got] to fix something. And once it's fixed, it will be very shocking and exciting."

 

Sounds more like Tim Kring took the fans complaints about how crappy her storyline was and addressed them.  Thus, less Ali Larter.  Though, Ali Larter in softcore internet films (even if they aren't real) is reason enough to tune in every week.
