ABC has renewed late-night show Jimmy Kimmel Live for another year. The new deal will keep the show on the air through 2008.
"I am delighted to have been asked to host a fifth year of Jimmy Kimmel Live. I watch it all the time," Kimmel said in a statement.
Kimmel premiered in January 2003 to an average 1.55 million viewers. Last year, the show had increased that to an average 1.64 million. Competitors Jay Leno and David Lettemran average 3.5-4 million viewers nightly.
"Jimmy Kimmel is the future of late-night television, and we're thrilled to have him on ABC," said Andrea Wong, executive vice president of alternative programming, specials, and late-night for ABC Entertainment. "His show exhibits great creative strength, which is reflected in his growing audience. As the only late-night host whose ratings are up versus last year, we expect his momentum to continue next season."
ABC will also air a one-hour primetime special on September 13 called Jimmy Kimmel Live's All-Star Salute to Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Taped live in front of a studio audience, the special will contain highlights from the show's four years, as well as cameos from special guests.
"If people don't watch this, I am going to be so mad, you won't even believe it," Kimmel joked.
