"Law & Order" star Jesse L. Martin had a rude homecoming in Buffalo, N.Y., earlier this week.

The actor was the victim of a robbery in his hometown on Monday, when thieves stole luggage belonging to him and two others from the SUV while he was eating breakfast. The perpetrators made off with about $8,400 worth of luggage, clothes and other personal belongings.

Martin, who grew up in Buffalo, was in town to shoot an independent film called "Buffalo Bushido." He was eating breakfast with the movie's director, Peter McGennis, and casting director Brette Goldstein late Monday morning when the robbery occurred.

"I'm ashamed of my city," McGennis tells the Buffalo News. "I feel like our community let him down. ... The purpose of the film is to make people feel good about Buffalo, and that's why Jesse came here. I had to drop him at the airport with nothing but his wallet."

McGennis and Goldstein also had items taken in the robbery. Central District Police Chief Donna M. Berry calls the theft "brazen," adding that "I hope these criminals read this and realize how they're destroying this city."

Martin is in his eighth season playing Detective Ed Green on NBC's "Law & Order." His other credits include "Rent" -- both the original stage production and the 2005 film -- and a recurring part on "Ally McBeal."
