The votes have been cast, the criticism has been levied, and the results are in. Jordin Sparks is the new American Idol. There's something incredibly anticlimactic about the season finale of a show of this stature. Months of tears, heartache, joy, ambivalence, and liver pain have rendered us almost incapable of realizing the full gravity of the situation. Beyond the crowing of a new champion, the bigger picture is this: American Idol is done for the year. Sigh. Jordin Sparks, the 17-year old teenybopper who stole the hearts of American idiots everywhere, triumphed over the oh-so-rock' and roll Blake Lewis. Jordin received the endorsements of every judge, and also managed to corner the majority of the viewer vote from across the country. To be perfectly honest, I don't really care. I've completely lost what little interest I ever had in the American Idol dynasty, as each year, each season, seems to blend into the last. Even so, I feel a stinging pang of nostalgic regret at the close of a season that I had little interest in watching...oh the irony.
