Cable network Fox Reality is in final negotiations to order 10 episodes of a show that follows a class of Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department recruits through their academy program.
The series, tentatively titled The Academy, is set to begin shooting this year for a 2007 premiere. This is the first time cameras have been allowed to film the program, and producer Scott Steinberg was required to get the approval of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
"This show gives us entree into a really unique world," said David Lyle, chief operating officer and general manager of Fox Reality. "There is a lot of raw emotion but in a sense that people are wanting to join [the sheriff's department] to do good. In some reality shows, the participants are very much about doing their own thing for their own aggrandizement, but here you get people with all the intensity, focus, passion, drama, and jeopardy, and none of them want to lose."
