Reality TV > 60 Minutes Creator Brings Rockettes to TV

May 23, 2007

The NY Times reports that Don Hewitt, the creator of 60 Minutes who was forced into retirement in 2004, now returns to television with the "Radio City Christmas Spectacular."

The Radio City Christmas show is a staple of the New York holiday season, but Hewitt decided the rest of the world deserved to see Santa Claus, the Wooden Soldiers, and the Rockettes (oh boy, the Rockettes) from anywhere in the world. Given that the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade are both widely recognized American television events, Hewitt decided that the Radio City Christmas Spectacular should become one as well.

It's typical that it has to be an old-school TV producer who comes up with a really great idea such as this -- good, clean, wholesome (Rockettes notwithstanding) entertainment for the whole family. I probably won't watch it or anything -- there are video games to be played -- but the idea is admirable nonetheless.
